8 Interest Facts About Dr. Seuss

On March 2, 1904, Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Massachusetts. You probably know him better as Dr. Seuss. In honor of his birthday today, here are some fascinating facts:

The Cat in the Hat

Dr. Seuss was disappointed that the reading texts being used in schools were so boring. He knew he could write a more creative book using the same beginning words to help kids learn to read. Dr. Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat using only 236 different words.

Green Eggs and Ham

After his success with The Cat in the Hat, Dr. Seuss’s publisher bet $50 that he couldn’t write a book with 50 words or less. Dr. Seuss then wrote Green Eggs and Ham only has 50 different words.

Dr. Seuss

Seuss is his mother’s maiden nameand his own middle name. It is a Bavarian name and pronounced “Zoyce.”

Theo LeSieg

When he wrote and illustrated a book, he used the name “Dr. Seuss.” When he only wrote it but did not illustrate it, he used Theo LeSieg. LeSieg is Geisel (his real last name) backwards.

If I Ran the Zoo

Dr. Seuss invented the word “nerd,” and it was first used in print in If I Ran the Zoo in 1950.

Mulberry Street

His first book, And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street was rejected by publishers 27 times.

Yertle the Turtle

Yertle the Turtle is the first known children’s book to use the word “burp.” Seuss’s publishers held an executive meeting to decide whether to actually include the word.

Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss has won many awards including an Emmy and a Pulitzer prize.
